The Interdisciplinary Computation & Modeling research Program for Undergraduate students (ICoMPUte) seeks to promote molecular modeling as a research tool in Chemistry and related fields. The program normally lasts two semesters, during which students work in interdisciplinary teams on projects involving wet lab experiments as well as molecular simulations, computer code development, and chemical physics theory & models.
The program is managed by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Brooklyn College. A small stipend is provided to qualified students. The program is supported by a generous grant from the NIH Institute of General Medical Sciences.
Chemistry and Biology students who are currently engaged or are pursuing research projects in biochemistry and chemical biology are particularly encouraged to apply. Students in other laboratory sciences: Biology, Psychology, and Physics, as well as Math, Computer Science, and Engineering are also encouraged to apply. Students interested in chemistry laboratory work are expected to have completed Organic Chemistry II laboratory. Applications from CUNY students not at Brooklyn College are also accepted.
For further questions and eligibility criteria please contact Prof. Emilio Gallicchio, egallicchio@brooklyn.cuny.edu.
The ICompute students, Cassandre Cheriska (co-mentored with Prof. Gerona-Navarro), Tatyana Kopkova (mentored by Prof. Murelli), and Moshe Janani (co-mentored with Prof. Torrente) presented their research at the 72nd Annual NY ACS Undergraduate Research Symposium, University of Mount Saint Vincent on April 26th, 2025.
Cassandre presented her work on the "Development of Anti-Cancer Peptidomimetics Targeting the SBD-SANT1 Intramolecular Interactions to Inhibit EZH2 Catalytic Activity"
Tatyana's talk was on "The Selectivity of Maltol and Allomaltol Oxidopyrylium (5+2) Cycloaddition Reactions"
Moshe's presentation was on "Heterochromatin Protein 1 Dysregulation in Amyotrophic lateral Sclerosis and Frontal Temporal Dementia"

It was a great event. Congrats Cassandre, Tatyana, and Moshe!
The second ICompute research semester has started! Two new students, Tatyana Popkova and Cassandre Cheriska, will join Sade and Moshe, who will continue their research. Tatyana, co-mentored by Prof. Ryan Murelli, will study reaction mechanisms. Cassandre, co-mentored with Prof. Gerona-Navarro, will investigate peptide inhibitors for cancer therapy. More news to come.
